UK law requires all number plates used on public roads to meet British Standard BS AU 145e. This standard covers font (Charles Wright), character sizing, spacing, reflective backing material and plate dimensions. A non-compliant plate can fail an MOT and attract a fine of up to £1,000. Every plate we produce meets this standard without exception.

When Do You Need New Number Plates?

The most common reasons UK drivers order number plates from us:

  • Damaged or cracked plates — a cracked or discoloured plate can fail an MOT and attract a roadside penalty. Replace it before your test.
  • Stolen plate — report it to the police, then order a replacement using your V5C. We make your new plate to the same specification.
  • Private registration transfer — just bought a personalised number through the DVLA? We’ll make your new plates once you have your certificate of entitlement.
  • Faded or dirty plates — reflectivity degrades over time. MOT testers assess plate condition; heavily faded plates do fail.
  • New or second-hand vehicle — plates on used cars are sometimes non-compliant or in poor condition. Ours are always correct.

A non-compliant number plate can result in a fine of up to £1,000 and an automatic MOT failure. A legal replacement pair costs from £14.99 — it’s not a risk worth taking.

Number Plates — Common Questions

What proof do I need to order road-legal number plates?
You’ll need a valid photo ID (driving licence or passport) and proof you’re entitled to use the registration — a V5C logbook, V5C/2 new keeper supplement, or a DVLA certificate of entitlement for a personalised registration. We accept clear photographs or scans uploaded during checkout.

Are your number plates MOT compliant?
Yes. All road-legal number plates we produce comply with BS AU 145e and the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001. They use the correct Charles Wright typeface, approved reflective backing and correct character sizing. They will pass an MOT when fitted to the correct vehicle.

What size are standard UK number plates?
The standard size for a car number plate is 520mm × 111mm (oblong). Square plates (285mm × 203mm) are legal on older and classic vehicles. Our plate builder applies the correct legal sizing automatically based on your vehicle type selection.

How quickly will my number plates arrive?
Orders placed before 2pm on a working day are dispatched the same day and typically arrive next working day by tracked courier. You’ll receive a tracking link by email once dispatched. Standard tracked delivery is free on all number plate orders.

Can I order plates for a personalised or private registration?
Yes. Enter your personalised registration in the plate builder exactly as it appears on your DVLA certificate of entitlement. You’ll need to upload that certificate — or your V5C showing the personalised registration assigned to your vehicle — to verify your entitlement before we manufacture the plates.

Can I get replacement plates if mine were stolen?
Yes. Report the theft to the police and obtain a crime reference number, then order replacement number plates from us using your V5C in the normal way. If you’re concerned about plate cloning following a theft, contact the DVLA directly — they can flag the registration on their records.
